Sabor Paisa means flavor Paisa, the flavor of the Colombian state of Paisa. The different states of Colombia have different cuisines. The Paisa region is known for the city of Medellin and coffee growing, Juan Valdez is a prototypical Paisa. The menu here also uncludes some Peruvian dishes, lomo saltado and arroz chaufa (Peruvian fried rice) for example, as well as dishes from other regions of Colombia. Probably because of the drug wars and civil war centered around Medellin, many Colombians left home and there are several Paisa bakeries and restaurants in Tampa especially on and around Armenia Ave. The hot chocolate is good here and everything I've tried is tasty. It's not a ritzy area and it's not a ritzy place. But it's fun to try. The people next to me had a casuela de mariscos, a kind of creamy seafood stew, so I got it too. I was impressed. Bandeja paisa, a platter with rice, beans, egg, thin steak, spicy sausage (chorizo), corn discs (arepa) and fried pork belly (chicharron) is a Paisa specialty. I like it with avocado but it doesn't seem to come that way often. It's a hearty meal! Kick back, try a Colombiana cream soda type soda or an apple soda (soda de manzana) or an Aguilar beer or aguardiente (firewater) and enjoy. Now work on your salsa dancing, Zumba, listen to some Shakira, and read some Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Excelente!!!

I had to grocery shop on thw way home last night and I was famished! I used my YELP handy nearby ap and came across this, kind of ff the grid Columbian restaurant. It is off Hanley Road in the strip center by the TwisteeTreat ice cream. It is a fresh, clean and open restaurant. Be warned English is not the first or in some cases the second language, but LOL, we got it all worked out. There is a combination of tables and booths, with multiple ceiling fans. The menu is very large with breakfast, dinners, seperates, sides, sandwichrs...defiantly something for everyone. I ordered the Mini-Paisa, which included beef, pork rind, beans, rice, an egg and an arepa. This platter of food was more than enough, I can't imagine how big the regular size potion could be. All was prepared properly and had fantastic flavor. Still don' t understand why Columbian people like the dense hockey puck type, tasteless biscuts, but who am I to judge, they are just not to my liking. Now the rest of the dinner was spot on, filling and very flavorful. I am so glad I found this little jewl. Being picky my only complaint is that the rice appeared old and was tasteless. In all fairness to the rice and restaurant, I did arrive about an hour before closing time. A clean restaurant, with terrific food, good service and a small price. A win. Win in my book. *** A word of caution, the hot sauce is served in a small sundae cup, it is not sweet and not for the faint of heart, it packs a punch on every flavor level. What's a girl to do? Keep seeking out new independent dining experiences.

Their empanadas here are always good. Their food is not bad. I definitely had way better Colombian food though. They have some competition though with La Cabana. If La Cabana wasn't far I would def prefer eating at their restaurant.

Went there on a coupon, which was not honored due to change in ownership. And it took a while to get that straight because the server spoke virtually no English....so just pointing at the menu did not work. The owner was fairly brusque, unapologetic and offered no accommodation. At other places where that happened, we at least got an apology & comp drink or app. It is just good business to try to win the food will of first-time visitors. We then had to go through the point & Spanglish effort of ordering...and the server had to keep going back to the owner to check and several things were not available tonight. So we settled for what was available, and it was not real tasty. We have had Honduran food before and so we had a basis for comparison. This is a non-repeat place all around.

For years now I have benefited from Yelper reviews and thought that my own first review should be for a very special place....... So for the foodies out there...here goes.... This place is a unique find. It is a Latin American restaurant but be bold, try the seafood stew, the Peruvian Chinese Fried Rice and do not miss the empanadas with green hot sauce. We were so shy to try the food and actually walked in just to look at the menu. Mr. Geniro immediately made us comfortable and before we knew it my wife and I were savoring meat and potato empanadas. Looks like this place is now owned by a new owner who is committed to great cusine experience and in my opinion is a real gem. Seems like they also have an extensive Colombian breakfast menu. Can not wait to come back and hopefully this will stay my hidden gem.....NOT! Do not forget to check out the Scarface poster and its Geniro replica...totally hilarious!
